Storytelling with Data 🐉

What is a story?

  • It has beginning, middle and end (Aristotle)
  • It has protagonist(s) and transformation(s)
  • It is what culture(s) is made of
  • It has audience(s)

1. Hans Rosling (RIP)

He was a phenomenal public figure, and sadly passed away in early 2017.

Two tribute/obituary podcasts worth listening to

Telling stories around data

2. Cole Nussbaumer Knaflic

Knaflic's website storytelling with data has resources.

What did Cole teach us?

  • Setup (turning point)
  • Conflict (character arc)
  • Resolution (climax)

Here are three different perspectives

  • Around data
  • In data
  • With data

3. Exercise!

Build a story around your project.

Bring in your data, and tell about complexity

Tell it to other group, then rotate groups

Try to pinpoint complexity and to simplify.

Ask yourselves:

  • What have we done so far?
  • What is the complex thing in this case?
  • What question is the visualization going to answer?
  • Why is this question worth asking?
